My computer won’t boot up. It’s frozen on a gray or blue screen.

  1. Shut down your Mac. If necessary, hold your Mac's power button for 8-10 seconds (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, etc.) to force it to power down.
  2. Disconnect all peripheral devices such as external hard drives, USB printers, keyboard, and mouse. Also disconnect any Ethernet cables. Only leave the power plug connected.
  3. Start up your Mac by pressing and releasing the power button.
  4. It may take up to a half an hour for your computer to boot after a cold shutdown while your computer runs diagnostics and system checks. (The next time you restart it will boot a lot quicker).
