Can I copy boomarks from my Mac computer to another computer or browser? How do I export/import/backup bookmarks?

Bookmarks can be exported to copy them to another computer or as a backup. Bookmarks are included in the backup of NSD staff computers and will be restored from that backup if your computer needs to be replaced.

It is also easy to import bookmarks from one browser to another, such as importing your FireFox bookmarks into Safari.

Exporting Bookmarks

You have 2 options to export the bookmarks depending on what you want to do:

JSON Format
This format can be used to backup your bookmarks with plans to replace the bookmarks in Firefox with those in the backup file (example is if you are moving to a new computer)

  1. In the Firefox Menu Bar at the top of your screen, go to Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks
  2. To export to the JSON format, click on the Import/Export Button and select Backup

  3. Navigate to your Desktop and click Save

HTML format
This format can be used to add the bookmarks from the backup file to those that already exist on another computer.

  1. In the Firefox Menu Bar at the top of your screen, go to Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks
  2. To export to the HTML format, click on the Import/Export Button and select Export HTML

  3. Navigate to your Desktop and click Save

Importing Bookmarks

To import bookmarks from Firefox into Safari please see kb article #563.

To import the bookmarks from the backup, do either:

  • From JSON format, click on the Import/Export Button and select Restore -> Choose File
  • From HTML format click on the Import/Export Button and select Import HTML
