How do I take a screenshot (picture) of something displaying on my desktop?

On an Apple computer:
There are several options to take a screenshot. Screenshots are automatically saved to your desktop as "Screen shot year-month-date at time" as a .png file type.

To take a screenshot of the entire desktop
Simultaneously hold down the keys shift-command(apple)-3.

To take a screenshot of a specific area of the desktop
Simultaneously hold down shift-command(apple)-4. The cursor will change to a crosshair symbol. Position the crosshair at one corner of the area you wish to capture, then drag to select the area of the screen shot. Release the mouse when the desired area is highlighted.

To take a screenshot of a specific window
Simultaneously hold down shift-command(apple)-4. Hit your space bar on the keyboard. The cursor will change to a camera icon that moves with your mouse. Position the camera on the window you want a screenshot of, then click the mouse. The selected window will be saved as a screenshot to your desktop. This works even if the selected window is partially covered by another window.

On a Windows PC
