Is my computer being backed up? How do I check my computer backup?
All staff Macintosh computers are configured for automatic backups. Student computers, lab computers, and shared access stations are not backed up.
|WHAT FILES ARE
|Your Desktop, Documents, and select Library folders in your userspace*
(your userspace is located at Macintosh HD -> Users -> [your username])
*With the exception of .mov .avi .dv .dmg .m4v .mp3 .mp4 .dvdproj file types. These files are not backed up, even if they are on your Desktop or in your Documents folder.
|EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOT BACKED UP
(Examples of folders not backed up are your Movies, Music, Pictures and Trash folders)
NOTE: All .mov .avi .dv .dmg .m4v .mp3 .mp4 .dvdproj files are not backed up even if they are located within your Desktop, Documents, or Library folder. Here is the complete list of files not backed up regardless of file location:
|HOW DO I CHECK IF MY COMPUTER IS
BEING BACKED UP?
Double click on the server icon with your district username below it on your Desktop (this icon displays automatically when you log in to a district computer). Navigate to the Backup folder, then the folder with your computer barcode, and then the Current folder. The Current folder has backups of your Desktop and Documents folder as well as some items from your Library (such as browser bookmarks).
The date and time of your most recent backup is recorded in the lastbackuptime.txt file in Backup/yourcomputerbarcode/Current folder.
REMEMBER: Backups Require a District Network Connection
Your backup will run automatically each day. You must be connected to the district network for a backup to complete successfully.
What About Files That Are Not Backed Up?
Only your Desktop, Documents, and select Library folders are in the backup. Other folders, including Music, Movies, and Pictures folders, are NOT in the backup. Also, most movie and music files (including .mov .avi .dv .dmg .m4v .mp3 .mp4 and .dvdproj file types) are not backed up even if they are on your Desktop or in your Documents folder. If you have important files in these folders please back up to CD or DVD, or to an external hard drive or USB "thumb" drive. The Technology Department will not have a backup of your Movies, Music, or Pictures folder and will not be able to restore them if your computer crashes or has a problem.
How Do I Report A Computer That Is Not Being Backed Up?
Please fill out a Web Help Desk work order stating that the computer backup is not running. Be sure to include the barcode number of the computer.
DAILY BACKUPS EXPLAINED...
When your computer joins the district network, the backup system checks to see if a backup has run within the past 24 hours. If the current backup is more than 24 hours old, a new backup will start.
Previous backups are available to Technology staff. If you need a file or folder restored from a previous backup, please fill out a Web Help Desk work order including the name and last known location of the file or folder (such as: the file named "Sally's sunny adventure" was last known to be in the Reading folder on the Desktop) and we will do our best to restore the file or folder for you.
