The fan on my Intel Mac runs continuously and loudly OR my battery will not charge

The fan and battery charging function on an Intel Mac are controlled by a program called the "System Management Controller" (SMC). Sometimes an event will occur that causes the battery to stop charging or  the fan to run continuously. Resetting the SMC can often clear those issues.

To reset the SMC on an iMac (Desktop):

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

To reset the SMC on a MacBook & MacBook Air (Laptop):

1.  Shut down the computer.
2.  Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3.  On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the(right side) power button at the same time.
4.  Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
5.  Press the power button to turn on the computer.

If the fan continues to run unnecessarily, please create a Web Help Desk ticket.
