Why isn’t my email auto-reply working?

In Outlook Mail, you can set an auto-reply or "vacation message" on your account. This will automatically send a message back to anyone who emails you to let them know that you are on vacation, out of the office, or otherwise unable to respond.

If you set up a vacation reply but people say they are not getting the reply, it could be one of the following:

  1. The auto-reply only replies ONCE to each email account, the first time they send. If someone sends you multiple messages, they will not get multiple replies back. This is a useful feature because it prevents your account from flooding a mailing list with replies or from filling your email inbox with automatic rejections from "do not reply" accounts.

  2. The auto-reply will stop on the date you set for it to stop. If you did not set a start and end date, it may be using a date that is already past. Check this in Gear Icon>Automatic Replies>End Time.

  3. The recipient may have filtering turned on that would reject the automatic reply;

  4. The person's message may not have reached you. Check your inbox to see if the message was received.
